aspergers failure to launch

Asperger’s and Failure to Launch Syndrome

aspergers failure to launchAsperger’s Syndrome can present with many symptoms that can have debilitating effects on young adults as they try to launch into adulthood.  Individuals often exhibit impairment in reading and interpreting social cues as well as difficulty understanding and demonstrating empathy.  Most of these add up to the most devastating effect for young adults:, difficulty forming and maintaining peer relationships.

Failure to Launch Syndrome symptoms in individuals with Asperger’s manifest beyond difficulty in peer relationships, often times creating obstacles in school and work.  Rigidity of thinking can create difficulty finding a middle ground and alternative options in complex situations.   A history of academic and career related challenges due to difficulty engaging with others and being flexible in various situations is common.  Social deficits and social anxiety often result in isolation and withdrawal from pursuing school and career related opportunities.

Here at OPI, a young adult with Asperger’s Syndrome will work with a therapist, life coach, education counselor, career counselor, and extracurricular activities counselor who will work together to help the individual explore and purse his or her interests and passions.  Participants have ample opportunities to learn social skills and social cues, challenge rigid thinking patterns, as well as learn effective interpersonal communication and reciprocity in relationships through the use of CBT, DBT, and psychopharmacology.

We also provide opportunities to build self-esteem and bridges of engagement to the outside world and inner world as well as social opportunities to practice social skills and build healthy relationships.   With the aid of a life coach, OPI provides assistance in building time management and organization routines that support the transition to living more independently and managing various facets of daily life.
