Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, also known as OCD, can be extremely debilitating for adolescents and young adults. Those suffering with OCD are aware of the irrationality of their thoughts and, at times, actions but find it difficult to stop them. Many young adults who suffer from OCD also have a tremendous sense of embarrassment, guilt and shame about being compelled to do these “silly” rituals that, for many, are internal so that others may not be aware of the continuing and debilitating internal struggle to resist these obsessional and/or compulsive thoughts or behaviors. Young adults suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder behaviors can become progressively more isolated and alienated and therefore progressively more depressed. As with every psychiatric disorder there is a spectrum of presentations and obsessive compulsive traits. Some may also experience co-morbid or co-occurring anxiety and depressive disorders, bipolar disorders and conditions and developmentally based disorders such as Asperger’s.
