OPI’s Volunteer & Career Development Department Helps with Spring Orange Harvest

Orange Harvest OPI Living ActivityFor its April community service event, OPI Living Program participants went to the great outdoors to get some fresh air and healthy exercise. The group took part in a community orange harvest at Franklin Canyon Park in Beverly Hills, California. The 10-acre grove dates to the 1940s and is owned by the Department of Water and Power, which operates the nearby Lower Franklin Canyon Reservoir as part of Los Angeles’ drinking water supply.

The Volunteer & Career Development Department of Optimum Performance Institute likes to vary each month’s community service event or activity so that participants can get involved with different charitable organizations and experiences.

The OPI volunteers spent a Saturday morning picking, sorting, and packaging the fruit; we ended up collecting over 3,000 pounds of oranges! The fruit is distributed to local food banks to benefit the homeless and underprivileged population in the Los Angeles area. This is the second year OPI volunteers have assisted with the orange harvest, and we plan to return for this special event next spring.
