OPI-Living Wishes L’shana Tovah to AllWith so many diverse individuals that come from all walks of life here at OPI, it is vitally important to be sure to recognize and honor all cultures, religions, and holidays alike. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is celebrated from sundown on Sept. 4 to nightfall on Sept. 6. Rosh Hashanah literally translates to “head of the year” and is considered one of the highest holidays within the Jewish faith.

In recognition of this devout day, the Extracurricular Activities Department put together bags of delicious Gala and Fuji apples and honey. The festive goodie bags of fruit were dropped off at each OPI participants’ apartment on the eve of the Jewish New Year. An apple was provided for each participant living in each apartment along with a jar of honey.

Dipping apples in honey is a Jewish tradition that is often practiced with each passing Rosh Hashanah. Some Jews believe the Shekhinah, the Hebrew name for God, is watching over us and evaluating our behavior over the course of the year. If one chooses to eat dipped apples in honey it is supposed to be representative of the Shekhinah judging us kindly and looking down on us with sweetness for the year to come.
