It was not an official diagnosable disorder until 1980 when it was included in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3145201\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, Third Edition <\/em>(DSM-III)<\/a> for the first time. BPD had, of course, been around and affecting people long before 1980.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a rough timeline for the progression of borderline personality disorder as an actual diagnosis:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1938<\/strong>: Adolph Stern lists most of the diagnosis criteria and calls the group of people affected &#8220;the border line group.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>1941<\/strong>: Gregory Zilboorg describes the disorder as a mild version of schizophrenia.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1942<\/strong>: Helene Deutsch defines a type of people dependant on others personalities as having &#8220;as-if personality.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>1940s<\/strong>: Robert Knight introduces ego psychology and describes patients as being in &#8220;borderline states.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>1967<\/strong>: Otto Kernberg defines boundaries between psychotic and neurotic, and he places &#8220;borderline personality&#8221; in the middle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1968<\/strong>: Roy Grinker does the first research on borderline personality disorder.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1975<\/strong>: John Gunderson publishes research to help diagnose BPD.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1980<\/strong>: BPD is included in the DSM-III.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1993<\/strong>: Marsha Linehan introduces dialectal behavior therapy (DBT) as an effective treatment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1994<\/strong>: DSM-IV is published, defining further the symptoms of BPD required for diagnosis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2008<\/strong>: The U.S. House of Representatives declares May as the National <a href=\"https:\/\/www.optimumperformanceinstitute.com\/bpd-treatment\/may-bpd-awareness-month\/\">Borderline Personality Disorder Awareness Month<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Current<\/strong>: Research continues to advance the field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Evolution of BPD<\/h2>\n<p>Most medical professionals agree that borderline personality disorder is not an accurate name for the disorder that affects moods, emotions, and relationships; however, no other name currently exists. BPD was first thought of as not as its own disorder but rather as a milder or bordering form of schizophrenia or other neuroses. This may be in part due to the fact that BPD so commonly overlaps with other psychiatric disorders. In fact, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3812906\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Frontiers in Human Neuroscience<\/em><\/a> postulates that of those diagnosed with BPD, 85 percent have a co-occurring disorder. Symptoms of BPD are wide-ranging, and they can vary greatly on a case-by-case basis, further complicating diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>Before BPD was fully recognized as its own separate disorder, many thought of it as a kind of catchall for people who didn&#8217;t fall into the set categories for other disorders. It served as the middle ground between those thought of as truly sick and those considered healthy. BPD sufferers were often thought of as having an atypical form of a different disorder,<a title=\"Depression and Anxiety Disorders\" href=\"https:\/\/www.optimumperformanceinstitute.com\/depression-treatment\/\"> including anxiety disorder<\/a>, bipolar disorder, depression, or schizophrenia. BPD was originally thought to exist on the borders between neurotic and psychotic behavior. Even after it was defined, BPD carried some negative stigmas about being untreatable, and people diagnosed with BPD were even sometimes referred to as evil or bad.<a title=\"How Is BPD Diagnosed?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.optimumperformanceinstitute.com\/bpd-treatment\/how-is-bpd-diagnosed\/\"> Many myths still exist today on BPD and its treatment.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Research continues to shed light on <a title=\"What Are the Root Causes of Borderline Personality Disorder?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.optimumperformanceinstitute.com\/bpd-treatment\/root-causes-of-bpd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">possible causes and further treatments of BPD<\/a>.
