LEARNING DISABILITIES

Our perspective on Learning Disabilities reflects our overall perspective for all OPI Living Programs: We treat the whole person, not just the diagnosis.

If specific learning disabilities are clearly defined, we address them directly through remedial educational support and therapy utilizing credentialed learning disability therapists. We utilize an array of supportive educational approaches: “Books on Tape,” individual tutoring, arranging for extended time in classrooms and/or note-takers as well as structured study periods and individualized interventions.

However, the process of learning can be affected by complexities that may not be recognized, or more importantly, even appreciated. These complexities include the following:

  • The interdependence of social maturation and academics;
  • Being anxious and therefore inattentive;
  • Being overwhelmed by competition and expectations;
  • Struggling with obsessional thinking that stretches a 2-hour assignment into 5 so there aren’t enough hours in the day to complete the work;
  • Body image that is manifested through eating disorders.

All these and more must be addressed within a community of supportive peers and mentors if one is expected to be motivated and enthusiastic enough to complete the following actions:

  • Get out of bed in the morning;
  • Go to class, sit and learn;
  • Spend time with peers;
  • Finish the homework and do it all again the next day.

How do young adults become passionate enough to do this? How do they get excited about their lives, their futures, themselves (i.e. their self esteem and confidence) so they have the ability and desire to persevere? How does someone gain the insight and courage to realize some goals are unrealistic and others, though encouraged by parents, are not wanted?

Our location and dedicated Departments of Educational ServicesCareer and Volunteer ServicesExtracurricular Activities, and Life Coaching along with our expert and friendly personnel make it possible for us to find opportunities that OPI Living participants can truly get excited about to develop their skills for life ahead.

Excitement from the individual is essential for breaking through the challenges that suffering from learning disabilities can bring, allowing them to find and share a joyous part of themselves, which, when reflected back, helps create hope for the future.
