Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT)

Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT)Mentalization refers to a focus on the mental states of oneself and of others - particularly in terms of explaining behaviors. In mentalization-based therapy, the objective of treatment is to establish a therapeutic process in which the mind of the patient is the focus of treatment. The MBT therapist understands symptoms of borderline personality disorder in terms of weaknesses in mentalization. That is to say, times when a person becomes confused about how they think and feel about themselves or others and how this confusion can lead to behavioral responses that can be dangerous, or impulsive, or irrational, but represent an attempt to make sense of very confusing internal experiences. At OPI Intensive, participants are offered a 4-week course in the fundamental ideas of mentalization, with an emphasis on understanding their symptoms, behaviors, and how therapy can help the participant reduce these symptoms and move ahead in life.
