OPI Vision of Transition

Many young men and women today who leave a therapeutic program or leave home for the first time to make the transition to college or the job force, face a daunting challenge. Thrust into the real world alone with few personal advocates, these young adults are often overwhelmed by isolation, behavioral challenges, and the lack of structure and support.

These young men and women are often unable to build a positive sense of self or use any skills they might have developed that could help them get good grades, achieve goals and succeed. Too often they begin to fail and return to old, negative patterns and peer groups.

There also are individuals who, because of awkwardness in their ability to express their feelings and participate in more complex social interactions, are unable to achieve their full potential and experience a “Failure to Launch” to the next stage in their developmental process. Many of these young people are extremely bright and are able to do well in select areas of academic focus but are overwhelmed by the complex social demands of young adulthood.

OPI gives these young adults the clinical support and individualized focus they need to make ‘real’ the tools and skills they acquired in other therapeutic and wilderness programs, or during high school or prior college experiences.

OPI offers educational services as well to help participants find a passion.

Learning Life Skills

Life skills training helps young adults to transition into independent living. They are necessary for self-sufficiency and they help young men and women feel confident in his or her own ability to navigate through the ups and downs of life.  Some of the basic skills that are taught in our program include:

  • Time management -how to multitask and make time for all that is important in their lives
  • Transportation – how to effectively navigate public transportation or maintain their own personal transportation
  • Cooking and nutrition – the basics of nutrition to prepare healthy and budget-friendly meals at home on their own
  • Physical fitness – the importance of staying physically active and how to incorporate physical activity into everyday life
  • Budgeting -Participants are taught how to wisely and responsibly handle their funds. This skill is of particular use for young adults who most likely have not yet had to pay bills and work without assistance from others. Budgeting helps young adults to practice self-control when necessary while also teaching them when and how to indulge.While spending and saving money appropriately is one of the main points of budgeting training, this type of training might also teach young adults how to seek out better paying employment, ask for a raise, or utilize money-saving tactics like coupons, promotional codes, and sales.
  • Routines of healthy living – the importance of personal hygiene practices, laundry, maintaining a clean living environment, etc.
