National Mental Health Awareness Month: Healing Can Start with a Conversation

Mental Health Awareness MonthToday, millions of Americans live with the burden of a mental health problem. Too often they go through life trying to “just deal with” or “get over” conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, and depression & anxiety – illnesses that can impact each and every aspect of their lives. The surprising thing is, fewer than half of all children and adults with diagnosable mental health problems receive treatment, even though these treatment options are readily available. During National Mental Health Awareness Month, we shine a light on these issues, support the individuals in need, and address mental health problems in America.

For more than 60 years, Mental Health America and its affiliates across the country have designated May as Mental Health Month and thereby have reached millions of people through the media, local events, and health screenings. The theme for this year’s Mental Health Month is “Mind Your Health.” Check out helpful materials they provide and find out more by visiting http://www.mentalhealthamerica.net/may.

Getting help starts more simply than you might think; it can begin with just a conversation. People who believe they may be suffering from a mental health condition should talk about it with someone they trust and then consult a health care provider. It is up to all of us to know the signs of mental health issues and lend a hand to those who are struggling. Shame and stigma too often leave people feeling like there is no place to turn. We need to make sure they know that asking for help is not a sign of weakness — it is a sign of strength.
