Five gold trophies on a blue background

How to Reverse the entitlement and lack of motivation found in the “Participation Trophy” generation

Participation Trophy Generation

Many young adults today have been raised in a generation where a sense of inclusion and instilled confidence were top priorities. As a result, many sporting and competitive activities adopted the “participation trophy” or consolation prize mentality.  Everyone received the same prize just for showing up. While well-intentioned, this sensitive attitude toward children has led to teens and young adults who are unmotivated.  They often lack the work ethic and skill sets necessary to be able to thrive in college and the real world.

In an interview with Woodbury Reports on SturgglingTeens.com, Jessica Breton, OPI Executive Director, and Dustin Tibbitts, Chief Clinical Officer and President of InnerChange, discuss this challenge and the techniques they have found successful in overcoming the hurdle that the participation trophy generation face today.
