Reflections on the Recovery Process in National Recovery Month

National Recovery Month at OPI LivingEvery September during National Recovery Month, the Addictions Counseling Department, along with the entire Optimum Performance Institute, takes time to reflect on the recoveries of our clients, family and friends, and even our own.

Recovery doesn’t always look the way people think it does. The process of recovery can relate to traumatic events in childhood, illnesses, substance abuse, people, places and things. Each story of recovery is unique to itself, yet as it unfolds, we find we each have common threads.

The journey of acceptance and letting go of the things that used to have a hold on you is yours to define, and no one else’s. You get to decide what you want your recovery to look like, even though sometimes it may not be pretty. As you go through the process, you may find that it’s not necessarily a perfect uphill climb.

Deepak Chopra says, “Every time you are tempted to react in the same old way, ask if you want to be a prisoner of the past or a pioneer of the future.”

So go ahead and let go of the misconception that you have to do things just right. There are lessons to be learned in the good, the bad and the ugly.

Learn to love your process. It’s yours.
