The Proper Way to Write a Cover Letter

cover letter CopyYou’re applying for a job and you need to include a cover letter with your resume. Why? Can’t your future employer see everything they need to learn about you in your resume? These days, it’s important to include a cover letter (aside from being mandatory in many job applications) with your resume when you are applying for a job. The answer is fairly simple – your future employer wants a quick snapshot of why you are the best candidate for their open position. Cover letters introduce who you are, highlights a few of your skills, and is a request to meet face-to-face with the employer. Your cover letter is your first impression, so it should be well written, well thought out, and should come off as impressive and effective.

Cover letters are a snapshot – meaning 1 page, if that. Don’t ramble or go on and on about anything. Keep it short and sweet.

Find out about the position and highlight what you bring to the table. How do your skills align with what the employer wants and needs? Your cover letter should be specific to each position you apply for.

Be clear and succinct. Don’t use fancy words or overly long sentences. Be you – your best, confident, enthusiastic self. Use action words and an action voice.

Show your personality, but don’t go for gimmicks or a hard-sell. Yes, you want to convince your potential future employer that you’re the best person for the job, but no one wants to have their decision made for them. Back up why you’re the best with proof.

At most, have 3 paragraphs:

  1. Your opening paragraph introducing who you are, why you’re writing, and how you found the position.
  2. Middle paragraph. Highlight your resume. What are the most standout points? How did your education play into your best work attributes? Include that here.
  3. Closing paragraph – politely request an interview and thank your potential employer for their time. They are, after all, taking the time to not only review your resume, but to read your cover letter. Here’s where you would mention if you’re including anything else with your resume (ie, a license, portfolio, writing sample).

Writing a cover letter doesn’t have to be difficult. Keep these simple points in mind and you’ll be done in no time!
