Breaking Down Barriers

BPD & Stigma: Breaking Down Barriers to Borderline Personality Disorder Residential Treatment

If you are a young adult who is considering your options for a Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) residential treatment center, you may feel all alone with no idea of who or what to turn to. Individuals with BPD can truly feel like an island. Treatment is on the opposite shore miles away. In order to get there, and get better, you must maneuver through rough and choppy waters filled with mental health professionals, family members, friends, and bosses who describe you as “difficult” and “hopeless.” Basically, those who sometimes those we seek out for help offer more hurt than healing.

The journey towards change doesn’t have to be so turbulent.

Break down the barriers of your mental illness by refusing to view yourself through these stereotypes. Believing in highly rigid stereotypes will only slow down your treatment efforts. You can make progress by refusing to believe the worst about yourself. Start with these important reminders.

You are NOT unlovable.

Along your path to self-improvement, you may run into unfriendly characters that hide behind various licenses and certifications. They may regard you with caution or disdain, as though you are certain to explode with the slightest offense. Some mental health providers may avoid working with you at all.

Remember: You are not unlovable or unworthy of help. Furthermore, you are not your mental illness. Borderline Personality Disorder is not your identity. While BPD can sometimes cause you to behave or feel in undesirable ways, you still have numerous redeemable qualities as a human being.

You are NOT to blame.

Another horrible stigma that you may encounter when seeking treatment for BPD is that you are responsible for the disorder. Some providers may hint that they think you are faking your symptoms. In some cases, they may suggest that you are trying not to get better.

Remember: Researchers have yet to draw conclusions on the causes of BPD. They suspect it is influenced to some degree by genetics, environmental factors, and brain abnormalities. The disorder itself is difficult to understand which is why some professionals may blame their lack of knowledge on you.

Living with BPD can be difficult, but it is not impossible.
