Borderline Personality Disorder and Failure to Launch Issues

BPD borderline failure to launchAre you a young adult who has received a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder? BPD may have affected your ability to jump-start new relationships, your career, and may be holding you back from living the life of your dreams. Learn more about Failure to Launch Syndrome, Borderline Personality Disorder, and how OPI Intensive can offer you the skills and support you need to take your life to the next level.

Characteristics of Borderline Personality Disorder

Borderline Personality Disorder is defined by tumultuous and unstable relationships, problems managing anger, persistent feeling of emptiness, suicidal or self-injurious behaviors, and impulsive and harmful behaviors among others.

Young people with BPD may partake in impulsive behaviors like spending money irresponsibly, engaging in risky sexual behaviors, using drugs or alcohol, or other behaviors that can be dangerous to themselves or others. These impulsive and harmful behaviors may appear immature or inappropriate for your age and your loved ones assume you need constant supervision to stay safe.

The truth is, people with Borderline Personality Disorder are experiencing intense emotions that get very difficult to bear. If they don’t have skills to manage it, their outward behaviors concern those around them.

Impulsivity and Failure to Launch

The impulsive nature which often accompanies Borderline Personality can materialize in your life as Failure to Launch Syndrome. Your parents or other loved ones don’t trust you to make autonomous decisions and live your life independently, and you may feel and acknowledge that you truly are struggling in these areas. Perhaps a tendency to make hasty and even dangerous choices has caused problems with your health, gotten you into trouble legally, or made you lose jobs. Can you relate to any of these?

You may recognize and dislike the fact that you make decisions without thinking them through, but you are not yet equipped with the coping skills you need to change. Maybe you want to make your parents proud and do the things that others your age are doing–forming intimate relationships, going to college, getting a place of their own or embarking into new career paths–you just don’t know how.
