Easy, Healthy Snacks to Feed Your Brain

brain food CopyHave you ever heard of “brain food?” Brain food is specifically food that is beneficial to your brain, especially in increasing intellectual power. Who doesn’t want more of that?! Here are some top choices for the most beneficial foods you can feed your brain (and they taste good, too!).

Oily Fish Say what? Oily fish? YES! “Oily” refers to essential fatty acids (or Omega 3s), which our bodies cannot make on their own. The most effective Omega 3s are DHA and EPA. We get this nutrient by eating things like flaxseed, walnuts, soya beans, pumpkin seeds, and oily fish (better known as salmon, trout, herring). Keeping our diets rich in DHA, which is in fish, is thought to help us manage stress and increase serotonin. The fats in these foods are important to healthy brain function, your heart, joints, and general wellbeing.

Blueberries Or, as I call them to my kids, POWER berries! Blueberries are LOADED with antioxidants that assist with improving or delaying short term memory loss. You can try this amazing blueberry muffin recipe.

Vitamin C That means anything with vitamin C – black currants, oranges, grapefruits, lemons, limes, tangerines, tomatoes – these are chock full of vitamin C and, aside from staving off that cold or flu that’s going around, Vitamin C has been thought to have the power of increasing mental agility and protecting against dementia and Alzheimer’s. Here are some great recipes that have abundant sources of vitamin C.

Nuts Nuts in the form of trail mix, alone, in a salad – however you like them. Nuts have an abundance of Vitamin E, which may help to prevent cognitive decline. Here are some homemade trail mix recipes that you can eat whenever, where ever (don’t forget to add M&Ms!).

Sage Did you know sage isn’t just for spiritual cleansing? Sage is also known for improving memory and concentration. Who can’t use a concentration boost these days? Sprinkle some (fresh or in essential oil form) at the end of your cooking. Here’s some info on how to use sage in your next cooking venture.

There are many ways to get your brain boost. Doing a quick search on the internet of the best brain foods for you will turn up many many options. Pick some and go with it! Reap the rewards of better memory, better concentration, and a healthier brain.
