GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND PHILOSOPHY

Roanne is a unique and highly individualized Program for Young Adults with Disorders of Emotion Regulation such as Borderline Personality Disorder program.

At Roanne, we understand the tremendous need that exists to acknowledge and deal with the real challenges faced by these unique Young Adults as they attempt to experience sustained happiness, stability and direction in the “real world”.

We believe they need continued, compassionate support in order to gain the trust in themselves that they need to begin working on career or educational goals.

We believe it takes time and patience to help them discover the joys that exist in the moment so they can break habituated attachments to the suffering of the past and skillfully address fears of the future.

There isn’t an “easy fix.” In fact, it “takes a village” to provide the long lasting transformation these young people need—a village comprised of highly experienced clinical staff working in a secure, serene environment with a plethora of opportunities  in the community to draw from in order to stimulate growth.

Roanne’s intensive 6-week Immersion Phase:
Participants live in our 8-acre, staffed home in Malibu, CA where they are grounded in a comprehensive program that includes an intensive foundation in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) integrated with a complimentary, developmentally-based model utilizing enhanced mindfulness techniques ranging from meditation and yoga to equine therapy, somatic experiencing, acupuncture and more.

The goal is to help them learn to regulate emotion so they can experience joy and fulfillment in the real world. This phase includes:

  • Psychiatric consultation
  • They begin a relationship with their therapist/case manager who follows them throughout their full continuum of treatment at Roanne and remains the point person for the family and referring professional.

Roanne’s two month Transformational Phases:

  • Participants live in our staffed apartments, continuing their DBT and Mindfulness work while actively participating in learning Transformational Therapy techniques. Together, these give them the developmentally-based skills they need to learn to make decisions and find passion and direction in their lives.
  • They begin working with the Optimum Performance Institute that founded Roanne. For nearly a decade, OPI has helped young adults discover and reach goals and independence (see www.opiliving.com).   OPI is JACHO accredited.
  • They collaborate with OPI’s Departments of Education, Career Development, Volunteer Services and Extra Curricular Activities as they develop and achieve “real world” goals.
  • They can finish high school, embark on a career path, take college or advanced college courses at numerous community and fouir year colleges located nearby, go to a technical school, volunteer at places such as Day Care Centers or animal refuges.

Characteristics of Roanne:

  • Roanne is small and highly individualized with one Independent Specialist for every two Participants.
  • Those who choose to progress from the 6-week Intensive Phase to our two-month Transformational  Phases are able to take advantage of Roanne’s Full Continuum of Care that can take them through Aftercare and beyond.
  • Each Participant continues with the therapist/case manager they started with in the Immersion Phase. This person follows them throughout their full continuum of care at Roanne and remains the point person for the family and referring professional.
  • Roanne integrates the best and most successful approaches from Western medicine and psychology with traditional Eastern practices.
  • Roanne staff is augmented by specialists in fields that promote mindfulness such as Tai Chi, Qi Gung, Yoga, Equine Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, Acupuncture, etc.
  • Roanne utilizes Trainers from the UCLA Mindfulness Awareness Research Center (MARC), Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior
  • Select Roanne staff members are intensively trained by Behavioral Tech LLC, founded by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., originator of DBT as an evidenced-based treatment for complex personality disorders.
  • Our Participants come from outpatient programs, therapists, physicians, RTC’s, hospitals, wilderness programs or home from throughout the United States and abroad.

THE ROANNE STORY

A Seamless Continuum of Care

(The Optimum Performance Institute created Roanne Manor. For nearly a decade, young men and women worldwide have progressed through OPI's highly therapeutic, educational, career, recreational and recovery program to find balance in their lives and their place as responsible members of society. See www.opiliving.com).

The goal of the Roanne program is to provide opportunities for creating new habits, making DBT and mindfulness practice part of one’s daily routine and engaging in DBT-individual and group psychotherapy and medication management. These new habits then are augmented by Transformational Therapy Techniques that help them move into the real world where each unique young adult can discover the personal passions, interests, and abilities while that will help them gain independence.

To accomplish these goals, each Roanne staff member has been trained independently and intensively. Our staff ratio is one Independent Living Specialist for every two Participants.

  1. The Roanne Staff was intensively trained by Behavioral Tech LLC, founded by Marsha Linehand, Ph.D., founder of DBT as an evidence-based treatment for complex personality disorders.
  2. Medical Director is Edward Spencer, M.D., clinician at the UCLA Borderline Personality Disorders Initiative Clinic.
  3. Patricia Gieselman, MFT, is Roanne supervisor and Program Consultant. She personally trained with Linehan as well as at Behavioral Tech.
  4. Marvin Belzer, PH.D., Associate Director of the UCLA Mindfulness Awareness Research Center (MARC), Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior teaches and coordinates our Mindfulness work.
  5. Robert F. Fischer, M.D., Executive Director, child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist has nearly 35 years of experience helping families. Dr. Fischer co-founded the Optimum Performance Institute and Roanne Manor and coordinates our Transformational Therapy curriculum.
  6. The Optimum Performance Institute: For nearly a decade, the staff at OPI has helped young adults reach their full potential and become contributing members of society. OPI is accredited by JCAHO and is a member of the National Assn. of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP).
  7. Roanne staff is augmented by specialists in the fields of Tai Chi, Qi Gung, Yoga, Equine Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, Acupuncture and Martial Arts.
Roanne - living area In Our Immersion Phase, participants live in our safe and staffed home overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Malibu. Here, they  are not distracted by the anxiety associated with emotional dysregulation. This allows them to focus on our comprehensive program of DBT and Mindfulness practice in combination with individual and group psychological and psychiatric therapy, medication evaluation and management.

In our Transformational Phase, participants live in our beautiful apartments near OPI where they begin the transition back into the “real world” utilizing a phased system for development and growth. They learn Transformational Therapy techniques while continuing to practice DBT-adherent and Mindfulness Techniques. They achieve individual goals assisted by OPI Departments of Education, Career Development, Extra Curricular Activities and Volunteer Services.

WHO ARE ROANNE YOUNG ADULTS?

Young Men and Women ages 18-28 from throughout the world with Disorders of Emotion Regulation such as Borderline Personality Disorder or Traits. Our Young adults generally are unable to:

  • Handle or respond to their anxiety in ways that allow them to stick with things whether it is navigating the complexities of relationships or completing a sequence of tasks or obligations in either the academic or work place.
  • Complete or achieve goals whether they be academic, work-related or social due to an inability to satisfactorily regulate their anxiety,
  • Many have had prior therapeutic experiences and treatment that, hopefully, provided some improvement. But they did not result in really helping these young adults function independently in a balanced and independent manner.

By providing a seamless continuum of care at Roanne, our Participants can achieve their goals and become functioning members of society. back to top

WHAT SETS ROANNE APART FROM OTHER PROGRAMS?

Roanne is unique and distinguished from any other program of its kind, providing new hope for men and women with Disorders of Emotional Regulation such as Borderline Personality Disorder or Traits.

Two of the many reasons why Roanne is so unique are EXPERIENCE and LOCATION:

EXPERIENCE — Our Staff has been specially trained in DBT, Mindfulness and Transformational Techniques

  • The Roanne Staff was intensively trained by Behavioral Tech LLC, founded by Marsha Linehand, Ph.D., founder of DBT as an evidence-based treatment for complex personality disorders.
  • Medical Director is Edward Spencer, M.D. a clinician at the UCLA Borderline Personality Disorders Initiative Clinic.
  • Patricia Gieselman, MFT, is Roanne supervisor and Program Consultant. She personally trained with Linehan as well as at Behavioral Tech.
  • Marvin Belzer, PH.D., Associate Director of the UCLA Mindfulness Awareness Ressearch Center (MARC), Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, teaches and supervises our Mindfulness work.
  • Dr. Robert F. Fischer, M.D., Executive Director, child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist with nearly 35 years of experience helping families. He co-founded OPI and Roanne Manor and coordinates the teaching of Transformational Therapy Techniques.
  • The Optimum Performance Institute: For nearly a decade, OPI has helped young adults reach their full potential and become contributing members of society. OPI is JCAHO accredited and a member of the National Assn. of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP).
  • Roanne staff is augmented by specialists in the fields of Tai Chi, Qi Gung, Yoga, Equine Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, Acupuncture and Martial Arts.

LOCATION
Not enough can be said about the benefits of being located both in Malibu and in Woodland Hills, CA, 45 minutes away from downtown Los Angeles (don’t worry about the freeways: We drive our Participants everywhere).

Roanne has access to everything this metropolitan area has to offer from multiple colleges and universities; employment opportunities; a culinary institute; a musician’s institute, acting, fashion and beauty schools and much, much more. There isn’t an interest we can’t explore.

We offer Roanne Participants experiences that would be hard to find in any one place, anywhere else PLUS the best of Eastern as well as Western techniques for enhancing emotional development.

For those interested in sports there is skiing, scuba diving, basketball, surfing, etc. Participants go bouldering, attend art exhibits and concerts to name just a few activities.

Also, exciting trips throughout the world can be arranged in conjunction with San Francisco-based Adventure travel Company, Geographic Expeditions. These trips will allow participants to experience broadened opportunities to appreciate and utilize both DBT-adherent techniques and mindfulness skills.

Additional reasons why Roanne Stands Alone:

  • We are very small and highly individualized with one Independent Living Specialist for each Participant.
  • We provide a safe, peaceful environment, in our Immersion Phase, free of distractions caused by the anxiety associated with emotional dysregulation so our young men and women can learn the tools they need to learn to function in the real world, select and maintain goals and develop healthy relationships.
  • Participants learn invaluable Transformational Therapy techniques, in the Transformational Phases, that help them move into the “real world”.
  • We provide a continuum of care. Participants slowly move into independent living while being continually supported by the same Therapist/Case Manager who works with them and their families.
  • Participants can maintain the continuity of care provided by the diverse and supportive Roanne Therapeutic  Team as well as peers and all the resources of OPI.
  • Participants are introduced to Mindfulness and DBT-adherent skills which they practice while receiving transformational therapy until all become part of their lives. This allows them to maintain supportive and healthy relationships while they re-integrate into the real world.
